Part of the great Spanish
repertoire developed by the late Andres Segovia that made casual listeners
into classical guitar aficionados. |

You’ll recognize this tune
right off but bet you’ve never heard it with guitar. This was a blast to
record and perform. |

One of the best loved opera
arias of all time, Pavarotti made a career singing this one. This arrangement
is inspired by his performance yet is a ‘dream’ based on the original |

This beautiful little lament
is from Falla’s ballet “Love, the Sorcerer”. The
opening appoggiatura reminds me of a tear drop as it falls on the cheek of
one who is lamenting. |

These “Preludes” fit the
guitar so well, they are a joy to learn and perform. This one Villa-Lobos dedicated
to his wife – listen to the romantic line in the bass. |

This work is dedicated to JS
Bach, a major influence in Villa-Lobos’ life. The middle melodic section is a
sequence from Bach’s famous “Toccato and Fuge in D minor” for Organ. My personal dedication to both
Villa-Lobos works is to my former teacher, Michael Lorimer. His performances
of these works were clean and driven, breathtaking. |

This work exudes joy! Lorimer’s
transcriptions of the Cello Suites are marvelous. I was inspired to make my
music exude lyricism after a transforming performance that I heard of Dutch
soprano Elly Ameling doing Brahms. What’s the connection you ask? I have no idea, I just know that I went home a different player than
when I walked into that concert hall. |
